Let me guess: you’re trading your Volvo for another Volvo? Vo lvo^2?
I see a Uhaul, a truck, and a Swedish wagon with obvious bodywork done to it. Are those your patches on the rear?

I just remember him saying there needs to be some substantial rust repair. It's probably better as somebody else's problem.

Only on the floor tub in the cargo area, which is not structural and won't require a perfect finish since it'll be hidden anyway.

No, I’ve just been its caretaker for the past few months while Snuze could get ready to bring it home
. He bought it not far from my house (that pointy thing in the picture's background), and as it's not in good enough shape to take on a trip from Pennsylvania to Virginia, I offered to keep it in my driveway while he arranged to tow it.

I just now saw where he explained he had it on free parking in his driveway. Exciting to get to see it for the first time after so long. Sad to see the prancing moose Volvo go. That one looked so good from the photos. Bored of it or just less bored with a new project?

Its a trick, this one needs a PCV service too! In fact it was so bad it blew out the front cam seal.
I also just did it on my 850, so at least I had a warm up.

It was never really a dream car, it just kind of fell into my lap, and I figured Id take it on as a project. But this, this is what I want. Wagon. Rwd. Manual. It ticks all the boxes for me, and having the 850 got me more excited and knowledgable about Volvos.

Im glad everyone is excited. Im excited. Ive been kind of a ball of emotions with this car, part of me worries I bit off too much, but I think if I try hard I can accomplish everything and turn it into something special.

Thank you.
Considering its 33 years old and has 228k miles, it looks really good and I think some Svending will do it wonders. But the rear end jank drives me crazy because its exactly what I want to do to the car, just horribly executed. I
t will torment me until I set it right.

You know, I have not had the pleasure. Learn me what PCV system is? What’s involved in servicing the beast and why is it cheaper and easier to just get a different volvo?

PCV stands for Positive Crankcase Ventilation. The basic concept is if there are gases (air, combustion gases that get past the piston rings, oil vapor, etc) in the crankcase (between the pistons and the oil), some of the engine’s power is wasted compressing these gases, so you need a way to vent them. But according to the EPA the only emissions a car can make must be out the tailpipe, so you must vent these gases to the intake manifold so the engine can suck them in and discharge them via the tailpipe.
So in 99% of cars the PCV system is a hose connected between the engine block and the intake manifold, with a check valve in the middle, r elying on both p ositive crankcase pressure and intake vacuum to suck the gases out. The check valve prevents crankcase vacuum or positive pressure in the intake from pushing gas back into the crankcase.
However, Volvos, especially older ones, use a much more complicated breather box system, with a gas/oil seperator and rely totally on engine vacuum. The problem is the oil seperator in the breather box clogs up with oily residue over time and then the system can’t effectively scavenge gases from the crankcase, leading to rough running, poor fuel economy, etc. In a lot of Volvos servicing this system requires pulling the airbox, fuel rail, and intake manifold. Additionally, most of the parts are plastic and become brittle with heat and age, so instead of cleaning them out you end up replacing them, which is not cheap.
Honestly, its not an insurmountable job, more of an expensive pain in the ass that could be way simpler. I just did it on my 850 and it cost about $100 and I’d estimate it takes 3-4 hours (it took me much longer, but Im still recovering from surgery). In most other cars you’re talking $5 and 15 minutes.

well...this is a first... you have to have a surgery to perform maintenance on your car???
#NeverVolvo!
Joking. Hope you’re better. This sounds like a bit of a PITA, but what on cars isn’t.
My C5 sometimes won’t let me drive until I take a 10 second break. Says pull key out. Wait 10 seconds.
Why? Security! If I wait only 9 seconds and push the key back in... rinse and repeat.
See. Even driving is not easy

well...this is a first... you have to have a surgery to perform maintenance on your car???
Yup, got that third hand installed, now everything is much easier!
Actually I started the PCV service before my emergency appendectomy. In the process of disassembly I broke some of the aforementioned brittle plastic parts. So I ordered replacements, then had surgery, then couldn’t get back to it for several weeks until I had recovered sufficiently. And even though I was somewhat better, I was still moving very slow and needed a lot of help using untrained labor (i.e. the neighbor kids).
You’re right , every car has it’s maintenance idiosyncrasies . But it’s one of those face palm things because the Volvo system seems needlessly more complicated, absolutely needs to be maintained and at shorter intervals than a valve type PCV, but it’s significantly harder to reach. Although if you want to talk about bad PCV design, my Cruze has 3 valves, each one built into a major component (turbo inlet pipe, valve cover, and intake manifold). You can’t service them, so if any valve fails you have to replace the entire component. My car is on it’s 3rd valve cover, 2nd intake manifold (yes, the entire manifold!) and 2nd turbo inlet pipe. #NeverGM

Thanks Stef! This has been a couple months in the making, between COVID and my unexpected surgery, but I’m excited to finally have it home and be able to start working on it.
I’m hoping to make some good Oppo content with this thing. Or maybe just videos of me losing my shit and teaching the neighborhood children new 4 letter words.

Well, you definitely didn’t see me, I’ve been down in the Bahamas since last Saturday. Don’t worry, I’ m not having fun, it’s a work trip.
And if you saw the wagon, god bless whoever stole it and did the timing belt, motor mounts, cam seals, and changed all the fluids, because that’s what it needs to be road worthy.
Most likely you just saw a poser who is trying to imitate me.
